STEP ONE – KNOW WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR
When current or new dog owners go looking for dog training in Miami, it’s usually because they have a dog who has a serious behavior problem that needs fixing or they just got a dog and want to get him trained. In either case, some will want to train the dog or solve his problem themselves, using online training videos or DVDs, while others will want someone else to solve the problem or train the dog.
If you use online dog training videos or DVDs for guidance, you’ll most likely accelerate the process and end up having a closer relationship with your dog. The reason is because you invested the time to build that relationship with him. Also, most online programs play on all mobile devices like a smart phone or IPad, which means you’ll be able to access the videos wherever you’re training your dog, in your backyard or at the park.
If training your dog isn’t your thing, consider enrolling your dog in group classes. Training is usually held at nearby parks, pet store area or similar locations and cost is quite reasonable. If cost isn’t an issue, you many want to hire a professional dog trainer to train their dog. Before making your choice, be sure to do some homework and prepare several questions for them in advance of the interviews. The trainer you choose and the training method he uses can have a big impact your long term relationship with your dog so take your time and be sure you pick the right one for you and your dog.
Most dog owners looking for dog training in Miami will ask a friend who owns a dog for a referral or recommendation. Others will turn to the Yellow Pages or search the internet for the names of dog trainers. - What kind of training method do they use with the dog?
- How do they get the dog to obey?
- Dare you involved in the training process and if so, to what degree?
- Do they use positive or negative methods to teach the dog new behaviors?
- How many years have they been training dogs for a living?
- Have they trained your type of breed before and, if so, were they successful and are they familiar with and knowledgeable about current dog training methods?
- If you feel good about their training approach, ask them how and why it’s effective?
What to determine after asking these questions:
Once you feel comfortable with their training approach, ask them to explain how and why it works. As mentioned before, the method they use can have a long term impact on the kind of relationship you end up having with your dog.

NOW A FEW QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF
Dog training in Miami isn’t different from dog training anywhere else. You’ll find there are two kinds of dog trainers. The first type will wait until your dog does something wrong and then give it a correction to teach him a new behavior. The other will use positive methods and wait for the dog to do something good and then reward him. While both methods work, you are the one who has to make a decision as to whether you want to train your dog using positive or negative methods. When you choose positive methods, you’ll find it helps the dog and you. Once we understand and agree that we are the source of the miscommunication and behavior problems we have with our dogs, not them, our attitude towards them changes for the better immediately.
What you have to decide is this … do you want to focus on the positive or the negative while training your dog. When we look at the positive side it helps the dog but it also helps us as it send a strong message to other members of the family. The most important thing for us to recognize is this – we are the source of the miscommunication and behavior problems we have with our dogs, not them. When we accept this, our attitude towards our dog will change dramatically for the better.
As dog owners, we need to take responsibility for the way our dogs act. Let’s stop blaming our dogs every time they make a mistake. We’re the ones spending thousands of hours with him and we can train and teach the dog new and better behaviors. It’s funny though, because in many dog families the dog is training the family.
We all want to have a well-trained dog and be able to take him anywhere with us. Training a dog takes time, effort and patience on our part. We need to make a commitment to get it done. If we do, we’ll end up with a have a happier life for our dog and ourselves.
