How to choose a dog trainer: philosophy, program and pricing
Before you hire any dog trainer, look at three things, in this order: philosophy, program and pricing.
Philosophy matters most, because it drives everything that happens for the rest of your dog’s life. It’s the difference between a positive, science-based approach to behavior and someone reaching for a choke or prong collar and a technique they watched on YouTube. At InsideOut, our philosophy is simple: we never hurt, harm or intimidate an animal. We teach you the proper, loving way to handle, train and change your dog’s behavior, and that commitment shapes every program we offer.
Program comes next: the right fit for your dog, your goals, your time and your budget.
Pricing comes last, because the cheapest option with the wrong philosophy can cost you far more in the long run.
Our programs and prices
Private lessons: $749 for 6 sessions
One-on-one training customized to your dog, your family and your goals.
- 6 one-on-one sessions, about 1 hour each
- Once a week or once every other week
- Book, reschedule or cancel online from your phone, at times that fit your schedule
- Sessions usually take place at our Apple Valley location. In-home sessions may be possible depending on the situation and distance (see “Service area and travel”).
What happens at the first session: The first half is planning. We go over the issue, clarify what you actually want to accomplish, and map out a customized plan so we’re both moving in the same direction. Then we set up your home environment to support that goal, because “no amount of training will outrun a bad environment.” The second half starts hands-on training, usually leash walking, heeling, or whatever is most urgent for you.
Every session after that uses “behavior through obedience.” We fix many behavior problems through the way we teach basic obedience, as long as we’re using the right science. A session may look like basic commands, but at the same time we may be working on leash reactivity, separation anxiety or food aggression, using those basic commands as the tool to change the harder behaviors.
Private lessons give you an expert plan and coaching. Results depend on daily practice at home, usually 30 to 45 minutes a day.
Board & Train: 4 weeks $2,495 · 6 weeks $3,495
Your dog lives and trains with us, and we do the heavy lifting.
- Two options: 4 weeks ($2,495) or 6 weeks ($3,495)
- Your dog lives in our home, treated like family. We don’t do facility or kennel training. Dogs are not kept in a kennel all day and taken out only to train. Training in a real home means your dog learns in the same kind of environment they’re going home to.
- We only take as many dogs as we can care for like our own pets, with daily exercise.
- Built-in daily socialization: Because we run a doggy daycare with social dogs, every Board & Train dog, puppy or adult, is socialized with other dogs every day. For a puppy, that daily socialization is priceless, and it’s something most trainers can’t offer.
- Includes 3 one-on-one follow-up sessions (half of our private lesson program).
Pickup (go-home) appointment, about 1 to 1.5 hours: We sit down together and go over the good, the bad and what still needs work. We walk you through the environmental and philosophy changes to make at home so the training holds up, and the how-tos for carrying the training into your home. Then it’s hands-on: your dog does it, we do it, and then you practice in front of us. That practice gives you the confidence that you can do it at home.
Two more follow-up appointments after pickup let you keep learning and work through any issues that come up.
Board & Train is a popular way to give a puppy a strong start, and it’s the right choice when a dog needs us to do the heavy lifting.
Board & Train for families outside the High Desert: Because your dog lives and trains with us, distance isn’t a barrier. Families regularly bring their dogs to Apple Valley for Board & Train from Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula, Orange County, Los Angeles and San Diego. You come to Apple Valley for drop-off, the pickup appointment and your follow-up sessions.
Dog boarding: $45 per night
In-home boarding, not a kennel.
- $45 per night. Discounts for a second dog or longer stays may be available, case by case.
- Dogs stay in our home, treated like family, and play with our social daycare group.
- Mostly offered to our training clients. Dogs that have not been in our training program must do a meet-and-greet first.
- Dogs must be social with other dogs.
- Must be up to date on vaccines (see “Vaccines”).
Many Riverside-area families drive up to Apple Valley to board with us because we’re among the most affordable options with the most enrichment, which saves them hundreds of dollars per stay.
Doggy daycare: $25 per day
- Monday–Friday
- Current hours: drop-off from 7:00am, pickup by 5:00pm (extended hours of 6:30am–7:00pm are planned)
- A full day of play and socialization with other dogs
- Mostly for our training clients. Same requirements as boarding: up-to-date vaccines, a meet-and-greet for dogs not in our training program, and dogs must be social with other dogs.
Why daycare matters: It doesn’t matter how well a dog is trained. If a dog has excess energy and busy lives or the home environment aren’t giving them the enrichment they need, problem behaviors show up: separation anxiety, boredom, destructive behavior and attention-seeking. Daycare gives dogs exactly what they need on a daily or weekly basis and helps prevent those behaviors.
Brush-Up Training + Daycare: $75 per day
A new service for dogs that have already been trained and just need a brush-up.
- A full day of doggy daycare plus training to refresh your dog’s skills
- Morning drop-off between 7:00 and 10:00am
- To book, call or text 760-265-9887
- Same requirements as daycare: up-to-date vaccines, social with other dogs, and a meet-and-greet for dogs not in our training program
Group classes: not currently running
We recommend one-on-one training instead. Our example: a group class is like trying to teach a kid to read at another kid’s birthday party. There are too many distractions, and it just doesn’t work well for young dogs.
Puppies: We train puppies one-on-one first, then use a group setting later to proof behavior once the puppy knows it. A puppy learning in a group from the start is mostly being baited with food and rewarded for being distracted. We teach the behavior first, then proof it around distractions.
Online program: paused
Our online training program is paused and in development.
Problems we handle
There isn’t a category of dog training we don’t work. That includes:
- Everyday manners: leash pulling, jumping, not coming when called, barking, chewing, potty training, crate training
- Obedience: basic through advanced obedience, AKC Canine Good Citizen
- Puppies: early foundation and prevention training, to stop problems before they start
- Assistance dogs: service dog training and emotional support animal (ESA) training
- Behavior problems: dog aggression, food aggression, resource guarding, fear-based behaviors, leash reactivity, separation anxiety
- Rescue dogs, including rescue dogs with extreme behavior issues
Aggression and bite cases: When a dog’s behavior problem is severe, including any dog aggression case or a dog with a bite history, Jason assesses the dog in person first. Then he helps the owner make a good, honest decision about the path forward. Not every case can be fixed, and the in-person assessment is how we find out. Jason’s years leading behavior programs at one of the largest animal shelters in the country give him a realistic sense of what can be fixed and what can’t. Clients value that clear communication, because it tells them which path to take.
How it works
1. Free consultation
Book your free consultation online here. You can also reach out by text or through the website, and we can set it up over the phone. The free consultation is an in-person meeting at our Apple Valley location, about 30 minutes; please bring your dog. At the consult we walk you through every training option, and it’s completely free.
We start with philosophy, then find the program that fits your needs, your time and your budget, based on the behavior problem in front of us. Some dogs need to stay with us for Board & Train so we do the heavy lifting; others can get there through one-on-one lessons. The hardest part of dog training is deciding which program a dog actually needs, which is why we don’t start any program without meeting the dog first.
Realistic expectations: The consult also sets honest goals. The right program and an achievable goal depend on the dog’s temperament and genetics, and on the owner’s ability and training experience. For example, a dog that is growling at the trainer is not going to become a service dog, and we’ll tell you that up front.
2. Your program
- Private lessons: a customized plan, environment setup, then “behavior through obedience” every session (see above)
- Board & Train: your dog lives and trains in our home with daily socialization, then a hands-on pickup appointment and two follow-ups (see above)
Why choose InsideOut Dog Training
Real behavioral science
Jason studied applied animal behavior in college and understands the science of the four quadrants of learning, plus all the other applications. He holds the CPDT-KA certification.
Our rule: “If I cannot tell you exactly what science I’m using when I’m training an animal, we do not use it.”
That means Jason can always explain what he’s doing, why, and how. If we’re counter-conditioning a behavior, we tell you that’s what we’re doing, why, and how many trials we’ll run. If we’re using habituation to help a dog get used to car sounds, we keep the dog below threshold and grow that threshold over time. Used wrong, habituation can make a dog more sensitive instead of less, so the science has to be applied with care and balance.
Trainers who rely on ideas like “leadership,” “dominance” or “you need to be stronger with the dog” are usually explaining away a problem they don’t know how to fix. Dog training is a science. It can be easy, positive and loving, but a trainer should be able to explain exactly what they’re doing.
There’s nothing wrong with trainers learning online, and everyone should keep learning. The problem is getting caught up in everyone else’s philosophies, changing game plans and following trends without a way to filter what’s good from what’s bad. When you understand the science of how dogs learn, you can build a program for each dog’s needs, and you can recognize when a popular technique isn’t scientifically sound and won’t hold up long-term. After 24 years and thousands of dogs, Jason has seen what lasts and what falls apart. For anyone paying for dog training, experience and a real understanding of the science matter.
Shelter behavior leadership
Jason served for over a decade as Director of Behavior for one of the largest animal shelters in the country. In that role he worked with the full range of cases, from basic obedience and puppy training to serious behavior problems and the hardest life-and-death behavior decisions. He also ran foster care and foster training, trained volunteers on how to train shelter dogs, and trained staff on how to safely handle dogs and take them out of kennels.

Policies and FAQ
Do you guarantee results?
Here’s our honest answer, because it matters. With private lessons, the results depend on you. We give you an expert plan and coach you through it, but we can’t do your daily 30-to-45-minute homework for you, and no honest trainer can guarantee a result that depends on the owner’s follow-through.
That’s why, when a behavior needs guaranteed results, we recommend Board & Train. When your dog trains with us, we do the work ourselves, so we guarantee the basic obedience your dog learns here, as long as you keep up the follow-ups and daily practice after pickup.
What we never guarantee, from anyone who’s honest, is a fix for harder behaviors like dog aggression or leash reactivity. Those we assess in person and improve with a real plan, but behavior that deep can be managed and changed, not promised away.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Yes. Use our online booking system to reschedule or cancel your own appointments from your phone, with no penalty and no cost. It keeps training flexible for when life happens.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash, Zelle, Venmo and all major credit cards (through Square). We offer a 5% discount for paying in cash. Financing is available through Afterpay and other payment options, depending on your needs.
What vaccines are required?
Dogs must be up to date on their shots. One important caveat: if your dog gets a Bordetella vaccine, wait 72 hours before coming in. It’s a live vaccine and can make other dogs sick. Any other vaccine is fine; your dog can come right in.
How young can a puppy start training?
There’s no minimum age. We just ask that puppies have at least two parvo shots first, so they’re protected while training. There’s no upper age limit; older dogs are welcome.
Do you require a meet-and-greet for boarding or daycare?
Yes, for any dog that hasn’t been through our training program. A meet-and-greet is always required before that dog can board or attend daycare. Current training clients don’t need one, because we already know their dog.
Do you use shock, prong or choke collars?
No. We never use tools that hurt, harm or intimidate a dog. Training uses rewards (food, praise and play) with leashes, harnesses, treat pouches and clickers.
How long is a session?
Private sessions are about one hour. The Board & Train pickup appointment is about 1 to 1.5 hours.
Do you have a training facility in Riverside?
No. All training, boarding and daycare happen at our Apple Valley location. Riverside-area families are welcome. Many drive up for Board & Train and boarding.
Service area and travel
We’re based in Apple Valley, California, and serve the High Desert (Victor Valley), including Apple Valley, Victorville, Hesperia, Adelanto, Barstow, Phelan, Oak Hills, Pinon Hills, Lucerne Valley and Fort Irwin, plus Riverside-area families. For Board & Train, we also welcome families from across Southern California, including Riverside, San Bernardino, Ontario, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Temecula, Orange County, Los Angeles and San Diego.
Most training happens at our Apple Valley location. In-home training can be arranged case by case, depending on distance and the situation, and travel is priced accordingly. We make exceptions where it makes sense, for example for elderly clients who can’t travel.
