Shelter Dog -“The Great Rescue Story”

Hey ya’ll, I’m here at the beach in Palos Verdes California and it’s just absolutely one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in California. I just wanted to take a minute and share something with you, and obviously you know me it always comes back to dog training and rescue or shelter dogs. I want to share something I call the great rescue story. I just want to give you a quick reminder, When you get a rescue dog or shelter dog they all have a past, whether it’s good or bad. Regardless, The dog is with you now and dogs are present animals, meaning you can shift any bad behavior into a good one, but sometimes us as humans, maybe because it makes us feel better I don’t know, we like to keep our dogs captive in the great rescue story.

Let me give you an example: you go to pet the dog and it shy’s away and hides down. Now someone can easily say this and I get it all the time, “oh this shelter dog must have been beat” then they start to feel sorry for the dog and every time the dog cowards down they go to pet it , now they reinforced that bad behavior, and the dog is stuck in that behavior. Who wants to be stuck like that? Really nobody, not even you and defiantly not the dog. What I want to encourage you to do is get away from the story, it’s good to know a little bit about the past, that’s fine use it to your advantage but don’t keep the dog trapped. If you use a positive method you can really take a dog to any place you want. I don’t mean a place, as in physical city or a state, I mean a place in a way of being. I know I sound like a crazy church guy talking right now, here just stay with me, a place of being of just complete balance.

You can do it but first you got to get rid of the great rescue story. Forget the dogs past and this is a lesson for us too, we don’t want to live in the past either so don’t make your shelter dog live in the past. Anyway just a quick thought, I was here in this beautiful place , it started making me really think how we effect our dogs. You don’t want to do that. Be present, be balanced with your dogs and they will be the same to you, but only if you quit using the “Great rescue story” to keep them trapped. Thank you guy’s so much and as always we will see you in the next video and be sure to check out our programs to help you along the way.
